WCAG 2.5.8 · Level AA
What is the minimum touch target size for WCAG?
Interactive targets must be at least 24×24 CSS pixels for WCAG 2.2 AA (2.5.8). 44×44 is the stronger, recommended size. Targets smaller than 24px must have enough spacing around them so taps don't overlap.
What it is
Target size is the tappable area of a control — button, link, icon, checkbox. WCAG 2.2 added a 24px minimum to reduce mis-taps.
Why it matters
Small targets are hard to hit for people with motor impairments, tremors, or large fingers — and for everyone on a moving train.
How to fix it
- 01Give interactive controls a minimum hit area of 24×24px; aim for 44×44px.
- 02Where a control must stay visually small, add padding or spacing so the tappable area still meets the minimum.
- 03Keep adjacent targets from overlapping their hit areas.
How Aulys catches it
Aulys measures the actual interactive bounds of each element in your frame and flags targets below the threshold, with the spacing fix.
