WCAG 1.4.1 · Level A
Why can't color be the only way to show meaning?
Color must never be the only means of conveying information. WCAG 1.4.1 (Level A) requires a second cue — text, an icon, an underline, or a pattern — so people who can't distinguish the colors still get the message.
What it is
Use of color covers any place where color alone signals state, like a red field for an error or green for success.
Why it matters
Color-blind users — about 1 in 12 men — may not perceive the difference. Relying on color alone hides the meaning from them.
How to fix it
- 01Pair every color signal with a text label, icon, or shape.
- 02Underline links in body text rather than relying on color alone.
- 03Show errors with an icon and message, not just a red border.
How Aulys catches it
Aulys flags status and link patterns that lean on color alone and suggests the second cue to add.
